- “Aww, I’m sorry, Tennie,” Taeyong says, wrapping an arm around his shoulders. “It must suck. I know that you like Kun and everything.”
- “I’ve liked Kun?” Ten asks, blinking.
- Taeyong tilts his head. “Um, yeah? You have the entire time I’ve known you?”

- talks to sicheng who… is mildly horrified. “please just talk to kun.” again, AS IF!!!
- the friend group is no help. taeyong, doyoung, who are…. confused. to say the very least. chenle who thinks this is HILARIOUS
- catches onto hints about people who, at the very least, liked kun and were close to them. talks to jun. kun didnt tell you? he cut him off because the omegas were mean about you. etc, etc, etc. a song? the only music he ever wrote was for you!!!

Johnny makes himself an americano, humming. It’s bizarre how well he fits into the atmosphere of a pretentious cafe, stupid mullet and all. It makes Ten kind of miss the bob. The one that made him look like a lesbian. He should grow it back out.
As far as Ten is concerned, his life is just fine as it is.
No, really.
There are people who would insist otherwise, but he’s like 98% sure that his life is going just swimmingly at the current moment. There may be a certain expectation that comes with being an omega in a conservative society, the expectation that an omega would need an alpha mate in order to be happy. An expectation that many people echo.
But in Ten’s humble opinion, this is simply not true.
Being an art student is stressful enough as it is, never mind a graduating one at that. The last thing he needs is some stupid, macho, knot-for-brains idiot breathing down his neck about mating and pups and bonding. He’s had his fair share of alpha boyfriends, and to be completely honest, none of them were ever much to write home about.
He prefers his life the way it is now: alpha-free. Unless you want to count Kun, which he won’t. Kun doesn’t count for anything.
Ten Lee is twenty-four years old, living abroad, surrounded by his loving friends and international comrades. Adding an alpha to the mix would ruin the freedom that comes with living outside the shackles of his sub-gender. Adding an alpha to the mix would upset the balance of things. Adding an alpha to the mix would change everything.
So despite what everyone says, Ten is perfectly fine without an alpha, thank you very much. He has his stupid roommate, Kun, his annoying best friend, Johnny, his collection of loyal dongsaengs, and enough overbearing friends to last him a lifetime.
Things are just fine as they are.
“Be nice to me today,” Ten says firmly as he gets let into Sicheng’s apartment. “I’m really fragile right now.”
Sicheng just holds the door open and watches him take his shoes off. “I wouldn’t dream of anything else.”
He doesn’t complain when Ten swats at him at the back of the knee and stumbles just a bit. He knows he deserved it.
Ten’s pining has reached truly disastrous levels, to the point where he demanded Sicheng let him come over and complain to his heart’s content, not knowing who else to turn to. The kids are too… well. Involved, he would say. Too emotionally invested. Not that Sicheng isn’t, but he’s the most sane person in their pack by a fucking landslide. And someone has to take one for the team and listen to Ten’s lamenting.
“How bad is it, really?” Sicheng asks, as Ten plops down on his couch with a loud groan. “Like, on a scale from one to ten.”
“It’s a ten all the time,” Ten says. “Honestly. He’s insufferable.”
And by insufferable he really means doting and kind and handsome, but Sicheng doesn’t need to know that.
And Kun may be stubborn and ridiculously impassioned about the most bizarre of things and occasionally the most annoying person Ten has ever known, but he, too, has a limit. A limit that Ten loves to push, loves to prod, loves to get him to until the alpha’s hackles are raising and he starts gnashing his teeth. And it turns out that that limit isn’t very high after all.
They end up in Kun’s bed. They end up talking. It’s really not so bad.
A long, drawn-out, sexy confession is just what he needed for the sake of his yearning. And, for the record, it was good. The maybe dry humping and everything. But Kun turns surprisingly vulnerable under the covers; arms slung over Ten’s waist and nose pressed into his nape.
Just the kind of chaotic getting together they deserve, perhaps.
“I think it was sometime after we got the cats. When I realized.” Ten tells him. “You were treating them so gently, like they were your own.”
“The cats, hm?” Kun grins. “Ah, then you’re not gonna like my answer.”
That makes Ten bolt upright. Excited, obviously. Making fun of Kun is his favorite thing in the world.
“No,” Kun groans, rolling away from him. Bats him away when Ten only follows. “No, you’re gonna hold this over me forever.”
“What are you talking about!” Ten says, admonished. “I would never!”
Kun sends him a withering look. “Ten.”
Ten sends him his best pleading eyes. “Kun.”
Kun groans into his pillow. “Okay, fine!” Ten floats under his arm, wiggling his way into his hold. “God!”
“I’m waiting,” Ten sing-songs. “I’m just dying to hear.”
Kun pinches his ear and sighs.
“It was sophomore year,” he says. “At a party.”
“That’s when I realized that I actually, like…” Kun trails off. “I don’t know. I guess it made me realize that I meant as much to you as you did to me.”
Neither of them had any qualms about mating or not, really, and Kun had ended up leaving it up to Ten to decide. Not that Ten is flighty, or has been noncommittal - not in several years, at least - but he’s more anxious and tends to drive himself insane over possibilities. Not that he’s insecure, but anything is possible. He wondered if he was too young, too foolish, too reckless, still not good enough for someone like Kun.
It took a lot of convincing to get Kun to stop micromanaging him the second the stove was turned on, but he backed off once he was certain Ten wouldn’t burn the apartment down the second he wasn’t looking. So there’s been progress for both of them.
(At least Ten’s self control has finally reigned in enough for him to not attack his boyfriend the second he puts on his glasses. When Kun first landed his internship and had to dress up everyday, Ten felt pretty damn ravenous. He’s calmed down, some, but not by much.)
(Which is why he tries to save the escapades for while they’re still in bed. Kun’s so lucky that Ten’s resolve is so solid.)
